Practical next steps you can keep. These guides are educational and do not replace legal or financial advice.

  1. Get your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com or an existing provider.
  2. Check names, addresses, balances, dates and account ownership.
  3. Identify a specific error and gather evidence. Accurate negative information is not automatically removable.
  4. Dispute with the bureau and information provider. Keep copies and delivery records.
  5. Review the investigation results, generally in 30 days, sometimes 45. If unresolved, consider a CFPB complaint.
